The Challenge
What is the Walk 100 Miles challenge?
The challenge is to walk 100 miles in one month. You can break this up into 3.2 miles every day, or twenty 5 miles walks, or ten 10 mile walks. It’s totally up to you how you take on this challenge and whichever way you choose, you’ll be doing something amazing for anyone affected by breast cancer.
Do I have to walk 100 miles to take part?
No, we have set a challenge at 100 miles in one month, but you absolutely can walk any distance, over any length of time to take part. This is your personal challenge, so you can adapt it to suit for you.
When does the challenge start?
Whilst we will be encouraging most people to take part in May, this is a personal challenge so you can start and finish at a time that is more suitable and convenient for you. Do let us know your plans so we can support you the entire way through.
Is there a registration fee?
No, we just ask that you fundraise what you can for Breast Cancer Now's world-class research and life-changing support services.
Can we take part in a team?
Yes, you are welcome to take part in the challenge as a team. You can select the team option when signing up and you will be guided through the process of creating a new team or joining an existing one. If you would like to walk together with your team, please make sure to follow all government guidelines.
- Plan your challenge around your daily walk – If your local area or usual route is crowded, you might want to try going for a walk at a different time of the day to minimise your interactions with others.
- Keep motivated with a lunch time walk – If you are working from home, it’s very easy to sit at your computer for hours on end without getting up. You could get out for a walk at lunch, you’ll come back feeling re-vitalised and motivated. Plus, all your colleagues will be impressed!
- Mix up your routes – Try and use this challenge as an opportunity to explore your local area. Take the time to rediscover where you live, and try some quieter routes you may have never tried, or venture to the areas you’ve always been meaning to see.
Can children take part?
Yes, under 18s are welcome to take part but they’ll need their parent or legal guardian to register on their behalf and ensure they are accompanied on their walks where necessary.
Tracking your distance
How do I record my distances?
Track your distance travelled using Strava (a free, easy to use app), which can be directly linked to your fundraising page to automatically log your miles. JustGiving have a really helpful, step-by-step guide for you to follow here.
Alternatively, most smart phones will have built in apps to help track your distances. You can then use the miles tracker on the resources page to log your miles and enter this manually on your JustGiving page.
I’m having issues connecting my page to Strava. What should I do?
If you have any problems connecting to Strava, the team at JustGiving are on hand to help you get set up as quickly as possible. Email them on help@justgiving.com
Fundraising
How do I fundraise?
Once you have set up your fundraising page, make sure to share it on your social media channels with your friends, family, and colleagues. If you’re comfortable, share your reasons for taking on the challenge, and any personal stories you might have.
Let them know how important this challenge is to you and how vital the money raised is to Breast Cancer Now.
Do you have any tips for increasing my fundraising?
If you’re looking for ways to increase your fundraising, have a look at some of our ideas below, and see if any of these could work for you:
- Personalise your Facebook Fundraiser page – add any photos or videos of you doing the challenge, screenshots of your walks, and any stories you might want to share. To thank your donors, you could post photos or stories about them personally too.
- Self-donate to your page to kick-start your fundraising - It shows your committed to the challenge & your donation of £10 or £20 might encourage others to at least match your amount!
- Host a sweepstake – Ask people to guess how long it will take you to walk 100 miles, and the closest could win a prize!
- Share your page regularly – don’t be afraid to keep sharing your page on your social media. Keep everyone updated with your progress, and remind everyone why this challenge is so important to you.
- Match Giving - Ask your employer about matched giving, they might be able to help you double your total.
- You can find more fundraising support and materials on the resources page
